This is the second part of the wash drawing exercises. The aim of this exercise is two fold, to understand the anatomy of light and how to render form using oil paint.

Anatomy of Light
Understanding the anatomy of light is key to describing form. The three shapes below are of a sphere, cylinder and a cube which the students will bear in mind when taking the forms of the face.

Rendering
The second aim of this exercise is to teach the students how to handle their brushes and paint. This is a similar technique to pencil or charcoal drawing using the white of the canvas for the lights and building up the darks using a dry brush. This should be familiar territory for any student that has used a pencil before.
