Level: Beginners welcome – ideal for all skill levels
A typical life drawing class can feel rushed or repetitive — 5, 10, and 15-minute poses, then a long 45-minute session after the break. You barely warm up before the timer runs out, or you get lost trying to refine a drawing before the pose changes.
Timing your drawing becomes a guessing game — where do you start, what should you focus on, and how do you build something complete under time pressure?

This 8-week Figure Drawing Course is designed to help you make the most of every minute of your life drawing practice. You’ll learn how to adapt your approach depending on the time:
In 5 minutes, capture the gesture and movement.
In 10–15 minutes, break down the structure and form.
In 45 minutes, refine proportions, foreshortening, anatomy and form.
You’ll gain a practical system to stay focused and confident, turning time limits into creative opportunities.

Over 8 weeks, we’ll cover the four essential foundations of figure drawing — each overlapping naturally as you progress:
Gesture – Capture movement and flow
Proportion – Build balance and structure
Foreshortening – Create believable depth
Anatomy – Simplify and refine the human form
Shadow Shapes – Use tone and line weight to define light, form, and volume.
Every session builds on the last, reinforcing your understanding while keeping you engaged with varied poses and live demonstrations.

By the end of the course, you’ll know exactly how to approach any life drawing session — from quick sketches to sustained studies — with skill, strategy, and confidence.
The course is divided into two 4-week blocks:
Block 1:
28th November – 19th December 2025 (4 Weeks)
Christmas Break:
20th December 2025 – 1st January 2026
Block 2:
2nd January – 23rd January 2026 (4 Weeks)

“As someone who has followed many online art tutorials on Youtube & Patreon I can honestly say that The Realist Academy is by far the best! The main reason being the excellent critique of work which Louis gave throughout the live Zoom classes. This made an enormous difference to how quickly and effectively our drawing and painting skills improved. He has an exceptional ability to spot angles, tones & colours that need adjusting & continually guided us back onto the correct path.Louis also is a very good demonstrator with clear description of what he was doing and excellent close up photography of his palette and canvas.Working on the same portrait in a small group has great benefits as we learned form each other’s critiques as well as our own.I would highly recommend Louis Smith & The Realist Academy if you are serious about learning the skills of drawing & painting in oils. I personally found the 40 week course hugely challenging but infinitely rewarding!Dawn White”
There’s a lot to be said for the online learning … the flexibility it offers is very appealing … whilst I do miss a studio it has surprised me how quickly you adapt … and I’ll never miss lugging materials around on public transport trying to get from A to B in the middle of winter when it’s days of never ending rain and wind.
