Workshop Outline

Level: Beginners to Intermediate
Medium: Oil Paint

In this friendly and practical workshop, you’ll learn how to paint a striking portrait of a Lakeland Terrier Puppy —focusing not on individual hairs, but on understanding structure, form, and expression. This approach is ideal for anyone wanting to move beyond surface detail and gain a solid foundation in how to model shapes and use light and shadow effectively.

You’ll be guided step by step in how to break the subject down into simple, manageable forms—building up a convincing likeness through strong shapes and confident brushwork. The techniques taught can be applied to a wide range of pets, from cats to dogs of all breeds, helping you create portraits that are full of life and personality.

Perfect for beginners to intermediate artists, this workshop offers a great introduction to animal portraiture, with an emphasis on observation, simplification, and structure.

All materials are provided—except brushes.
You don’t need to break the bank for this workshop! High-end brushes aren’t necessary—affordable hog hair brushes from Amazon will do the job perfectly. With a bit of know-how, you can achieve professional-looking results using simple, budget-friendly tools.

Here are some snapshots from our recent workshop, where students worked on the Pre-Raphaelite Style Workshop. As you can see, the participants achieved impressive results.

Beginners and experienced people are welcome. Understanding is key and nobody gets left behind. Each student will be helped until they grasp the principles of the lesson. Louis will be demonstrating each step in front of the group and on students work if needed.
Louis Smith studied Classical Art in Florence and has exhibited his work in the National Portrait Gallery and Royal Society of Portrait
