3 Week Course

13th-20th-27th May 2017

Saturdays 9.30-17.00

Price £240

Aim of the Course

This is the second of a two-part workshop. The first workshop covers the Underpainting and the second Glazing Techniques. The underpainting is used to work out the drawing and tonal ranges. Once the underpainting is finished I can concentrate on applying the colour, reassured by the fact that all the proportions and tones are correct so you can move forward without needing to fix any mistakes.

Note, if you missed the first workshop then underpainting will be provided for students to work on for the duration of the workshop.

Timetable

We will start using opaque glazes to cover the underpainting and finish with transparent glazes to refine the subtle areas of tone and colour.

Week 1 Opaque glazes, using the underpainting as a guide.

Week 2  Semi translucent glazes, once the painting has dried we can start to refine the forms.

Week 3 translucent glazes used to render the subtleties of tone and colour.

About the Glazing Course

For this Glazing Workshop we will be using a Grisaille Underpainting. The underpainting determines the type of glazing method.

The Grisaille Underpainting (French word for gray) is a method using gray monochrome tones. Opaque colours are added to cover the underpainting then translucent layers are applied at later stages to refine the painting.

The Terre Verte Underpainting (type of green pigment) which is similar to the Grisaille approach but is much lighter in tone the darker tones are added with the glazes after. The problem with this technique is the building up multiple glazes to achieve a solid colour, it can be a slow and laborious method waiting for each layer to dry.

Teaching Style Beginners and experienced people are welcome. Understanding is key and nobody gets left behind. Each student will be helped until they grasp the principles of the lesson. Louis believes in leading from the front, demonstrating each step in front of the group and on students’ work if needed. Louis Smith studied Classical Art in Florence and has exhibited his work in the BP Portrait Award and Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
