2-Day Oil Painting Workshop

Level: Beginners welcome – ideal for all skill levels

Capture the vibrant glow of city lights, bustling trams, and atmospheric twilight skies in this immersive 2-day painting workshop set in the heart of Manchester.

We’ll explore how to translate the beauty of Manchester  centre at twilight into oil paint – from glowing shopfronts to the motion of the passing tram – using rich colour and expressive brushwork.

What you’ll learn:

  • 1-point perspective – master the basics of linear depth in urban landscapes
  • Atmospheric perspective – learn how to make distance read on the canvas:
  • Farther = lighter, bluer, softer
  • Closer = darker, warmer, more defined

Techniques:

  • Start with a painterly, abstract underpainting
  • Gradually tighten detail along the horizon line
  • Use washes vs. solid colour to enhance depth and atmosphere
  • Work with a bold and expressive palette of violet, ultramarine blue, viridian, and orange hues

This workshop is ideal for those who want to loosen up their technique, learn how to simplify complex scenes, and gain confidence with oil painting in a friendly and supportive environment.
